Mysterious Beauty of The Oldest Sanctuary in Vietnam

Over time, My Son Sanctuary dressed up as ancient and mysterious beauty attract domestic and foreign tourists.


My Son Sanctuary is located in the valley about 2 km in diameter, surrounded by hills and mountains in Duy Phu commune, Duy Xuyen district, Quang Nam province, away 70km from Da Nang and 40 km from Hoi An. This is the Hindu holy relic of the ancient Kingdom of Champa.

According to the traditional ceremony, a king came to the throne after My Son holy ceremony bleach, offering gifts and build the temple.


This area was discovered in 1885 by a group of French soldiers. Ten years later (1895), Camille Paris archaeologists have come here to do the first explorations. From then until 1904, many researchers and other archaeologists try to reveal the secret as Louis Finot, Henri Permentier...


My Son Sanctuary consists of 70 towers project is divided into several clusters and built according to the same principle.


Structural each cluster consists of the main temple, surrounded by smaller stupas or works. In the main temple which represents Mount Meru, the center of the universe, a place to gather spirits and worship God Siva. Tower gate is in front of the main temple; there are two other doors in the east and the west. Mandapa is a long house next to gate tower, used to be a place to welcome pilgrims, and accept gifts. Next to the main temple is a tower which have one or two rooms. The doors face to the north, used for storage of sacrifice.


Architectural style here is divided into six categories including: antique style, Hoa Lai, Dong Duong, My Son, Po Nagar and Binh Dinh style. Common motifs are flowers, animals like elephants or lions, images Kala - Makara (a symbol of the Cham Pa), animation Apsara dancers, musicians, gods stand holder or monster Makara...


The period from 1965 to 1972, Duy Xuyen area became a battleground. Along the village, this place suffered heavy losses. In particular, the bombing in 1969, distorting the shape, makes most of the towers collapsed buildings or major damage.

In 1980, in the framework of cultural cooperation Vietnam - Poland, the subcommittee restored ruins of Champa was founded by the late architect Kazimiers Kwiatkowske charge. Then, this monument was cleaned, restored and reinforced. Thus, the area retains its form today.


To monuments stand at the time, in 1995, the management of My Son relic was established. In 1998, 1999, records where the UNESCO World Heritage Site is also sent. 

May 12/1999, this place is the official World Cultural Heritage with two criteria: the striking example of the cultural exchange with the integration into the local culture. The external cultural influences, especially the art of architecture Hindu Indian subcontinent vividly reflects the evolution of the cultural history of Champa culture in the history of Southeast Asia. 


For conservation, green belt set. Thus, the blue started covering around the ruins. 


Currently, it is open to visit all year round. The price of a ticket is VND 60,000 for domestic tourists and for international tourists is VND 100,000.
